Chapter 1 – Making A Wish
The coin was starting to move. Her partner fingers were trembling for first time being part of spirit calling. Anita was conscious but her brain was evocative that lend support to coin. Both eyes gazed the path followed by coin. It stopped somewhere near the letters. The right candle suddenly extinguished.
“Switch off fan,” Anita almost yelled. Hush! exclaimed Rohni. Saying in low voice, “Spirits get distracted with minor disrespect.” Within the dark, their third friend, Gulabi lightened up the candle. Strangely they all have concurred earlier for no fan and it was not even running. The first letter was “M.” The curiosity increased with both friends looking into each other eyes with mischievous hint. The coin pulled backward. The board was smooth but it seems the coin was really under some possession as it was moving very coarsely. An owl hooted outside. It was midnight as supposed to be best time for restless spirits to come and answer life-defining questions raised by these teenagers.
The candles were still flickering though no window was open. The coin reached at letter “O.” It formed first two letters of a person’s name who was put as question to spirits as would-be life partner for Anita. Rohni was not in favor of this spirit invoking because being belonging to deep valleys of Kumao in Himachal Pradesh, she knew certainly how spirits guided but at cost. It is a difficult custom to keep them happy. There are rituals to be followed strictly.
The sweet fragrance of incense brought her back to the scene but suddenly it smelt like rotten apple. Rohni looked around and found Gulabi is working on a flower necklace of fresh pods of bitter orange. The smells must have mingled. Anita tried to wave her hand around her nose while caring not to blow away candle. Her right-hand finger still concentrated on coin as it seem to take a round trip forth and back across letters, as if spirits are considering something. The next letter stop was “H.”
No one is expecting any thing concrete at this time. The minds are free from any thought. The life is full far from mist-filled mornings which laid beautiful serenity in their native lives. This serenity converted into bulbous activity with lots of young men and women trying their careers at city college. This hostel room is today as spooky as it is on other days with warden making a surprise trip past 10 p.m. to check if the girls have retired to bed or not. The lights should be off. This is followed by round trips which are made by on-duty security female guards as per their wish.
Gulabi is unnervingly keeping eye through the hole in the lining that is blanketed by curtain over thick mosquito-protecting mesh over windows. She is now unperturbed even after many provided their goosebumps stories of facing suddenly fact-finding bright light from torch of warden. The heavy footsteps suddenly approached their room and to her amazement the warden suddenly stopped by the room window. Her heart pricked its beats and her hand gestured back of warning while she tried to remain as stiff as possible not providing any movement to the lining.
There was commotion between Anita and Rohni which went with both being perplexed about spirit calling and danger impending at door. The coin moved towards the letter “I.” Everyone remained still for a while thinking that they have blocked the space beneath door enough for light not to pass and then a zero-watt bulb is allowed in room for girls who fear from dark. Rohni felt her finger was losing the grip of coin as it approached the last letter and she became more conscious because being scared of spirits.
Spirits are mysterious. Both partners in ritual purchased everything as told by their Google-researcher fellow, Gulabi that should be part of this to make spirits happy. Gulabi, by this time, heaved a sign of relief as warden went an appreciable length away without noticing anything strange. She sat with a thud near the window. Anita became terrified as she took it to be sign of being caught. Her right hand jerked and touched cannabis powder in silverware saucer placed aside as part of ritual. She shook her fingers and the powder spread into the atmosphere and some fell on the board. Rohni looking at her, giggled, unaware of reason as she was having her back to Gulabi. The coin moved towards “T.”
Anita blew away candles as she slowly whispered into Rohni’s ear to say thanks to spirits along with her. She quickly packed away the board beneath her bed. Gulabi found it irrationally irritating being left in complete dark and without making any noise crept slowly near Anita’s bed. As she approached, Anita was already being cosy in her bed on left which she shares with Gulabi when they intend to spend nights together.
No questions were asked and no replies came as the fear of round trip by warden still lingered heavily on their minds.
